Joe - Director / Customer Delivery (and SW Young Bricklayer of the Year at 16!)

Joe’s story

“I grew up on Bristol’s building sites. My dad Joseph was a builder, his dad before him. At 15, I was laying bricks alongside my old man. At 16, I won South-West Young Bricklayer of the Year – still one of my proudest moments, if I'm honest.

By 20, I wanted to build something of my own. I called it Simply Build Better* because that's all I cared about: doing good work, treating people right, getting it done properly. No fancy mission statement, just that.

Here's the thing about building… you can't fake it. Cut a corner, rush a job, bodge something to save time – it always comes back to bite you. I learned early on: the quick way is the long way. Do it right first time and everyone sleeps better.

Thirty years later, I've never advertised. Almost every project has come through someone saying, "You should talk to Joe". That's built on one thing… trust. My customers tell me the same thing over and over – "We trust you". That means everything to me.

I've been lucky to work with brilliant people. Most of my team have been with me for years. My son James is often with us too and watching him grow into this trade is something special. We've built homes across Bristol, worked on renovations and extensions I'm genuinely proud of, helped families create spaces they love.

In 2025 I celebrated the delivery of my 500th Bristol building project, and this year, I turned 50. Two big moments. The third was to finally take the family name – ‘Dybowski’– for the business*. It felt right – it's who I am, where I come from, what we're building together. A decent legacy.

If you have a Bristol build project in mind and you want it done properly by people who care, please contact us. No pressure, no sales pitch. Just an honest chat about what you're trying to achieve and whether we're the right people to help you get there.

*In 1996, there was Dad Dybowski and more than 20 other Dybowskis working the building trades in Bristol. Cousins, uncles, nephews and more – all ‘old Poles’ and all Bristol-born-and-bred. As a precocious 20-year-old starting out in the building business, it never felt right to take the family name. And it would have confused far too many people!

Nick – Director / Business Operations

Nick’s story

In 1995, I saw a young lad crafting a bell cast on an old shop front opposite my office. If a bell cast can be beautiful, this was it. I was so curious about the boy that I crossed the road to talk with him. Three months later, he was in my home gutting the basement and transforming it into something truly outstanding. He turned 19 on the day he finished.

I was his first customer.

We’ve been great friends ever since and worked together on lots of ‘passion’ projects (including this one). Were it not for spending 20 years across the other side of the world, I’d have been in business with Joe from the start. Better late than never.

My role at Dybowski is to set Joe and the team up for even greater success, handling all the back office ops and systems, the kind of things that take Joe away from doing what he does best – caring for customers and delivering great build projects.

With so many builders in Bristol, what sets us apart?

Do it right

No shortcuts, no compromises. We follow regulations properly, plan thoroughly and get it right first time – because fixing mistakes later costs everyone more.

Respect the craft

Good work takes time, skill matters, experience pays. Leave every project knowing you did your best. That pride shows.

Look after each other

We treat our team fairly, pay them well and create an environment where people want to give their best. Good culture builds better homes.
